New data manager for WoRMS: Leen Vandepitte

The Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) has appointed Leen Vandepitte as the new data manager for WoRMS.

Leen is a biologist with a lot of experience in biological data management. In the VLIZ data centre, she is also responsable for the management of EurOBIS. Wim Decock (biologist) and Bart Vanhoorne (IT specialist) will of course continue to serve in the data management team for WoRMS. [Read more]

The portal of PESI (Pan-European Species directories Infrastructure) has been launched: www.eu-nomen.eu/portal and is available in 21 European languages. With time, it will be possible to find and search through the information of all species appearing in Europe. Not only the species living in seas and oceans, but also of all terrestrial and aquatic species. We recently held our 1st meeting of the editorial board of the IOC taxonomic reference list of harmful micro algae (11-13 October 2010 in Hillerød, Denmark). The reference list is an integral part of the World Register of Marine Species database and is actively maintained by nine taxonomic experts. SMEBD endorsed the "ZooKeys" publisher as a GBIF data provider on 21st June 2009. It is part of GBIF quality control that new data providers are so endorsed by an existing GBIF participant.

The Society for the Management of Electronic Data (SMEBD) was pleased to become an Associate Participant of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) on 6 March 2009.
